Leaving Paris

Today we head to the train station and head east or south or somewhere... not sure where we are going to end up tonight.

Yesterday we went to the Jardin du Luxembourg and there was a free open air concert so we stayed a while...then wandered through the gardens...

We walked from there to the Pantheon
and ate crepes across the road....

Then we grabbed the Metro to our opera which started 2:30pm (Lucia di Lammermoor) at the Bastille Opera house.  It was jen's first opera experience and she loved it ... needed a few tissues to get through.  We were in the middle of the 7th row so could see all the expressions etc... very amazing and wow the lead singer's voice was something else...

Then last night went to dinner and then a Jazz club about 5 minutes walk from our hotel.

Doing it tough...

What I've learned in Paris - on a lighter note

Well I'm only a week here and already fluent in french ( that is I can awkwardly manage to string a small sentence together), funnily enough the Parisians must speak a different version of french because they can understand me.

Bob has made me order most things and pay for all so I am getting a little practice every day.  It is easy when they tell you how much things are and I just hold out the biggest note I can in the hope that I got it right.  So far so good.

Our hotels are in the heart if the city so everything is close and handy. Our first hotel was great.  The shower was only 2 feet wide - literally and if I stood side on one wall I couldn't put my hand on my hip without touching the adjacent wall.  I think it has something to do with the fact that we have consumed numerous pastries and bread and jam until we look like a roll or that we huffed and puffed and nearly blew our brains out after climbing 3 flights of stairs and not being able to communicate any other way other than caveman speak with a lot of moans and groans when we reached the top of the stairs. It seems everything here is Petite (except us).

Our new hotel is so luxurious.  It has real pillows as opposed to the roll at the end of the bed which is just to take up the extra queen sized quilt that fits on to the smallest double bed I have ever seen.  We also have a lift which has a maximum of 2 persons at a time.  This is because when you come down you come together but after numerous pastries and bread and jam for brekky ( yet again) both of us can't fit in the lift together.  Our bathroom is very spacious, we can both fit in the room at the same time but if exiting the bathroom, it is one at a time as the door only half opens due to it hitting the bed on the way out.

I think they are trying to tell us something!!!!

Well, we have another day of pounding the pavement with our pancake like feet ( after all our walking) a full schedule of events to squeeze in before heading off to who knows where tomorrow.  Yes, that's us.  Fly by the seat of our pants people, nomads in the midst of Europe with no clue as to where we are going, so in case we get lost, watch this space!!!

We love and miss you all very much and wish you were here to share this adventure with us ( translated this means - Help, we need some guidance - is there anyone out there?).....

Disclaimer........this blog was written by an unknown person who is still lost in Paris, don't turn me around twice I say!!!!.  No responsibility is taken for the views expressed.  And when all else fails... SHOUT !

Jen has new shoes...

We have moved 100 metres down the street to a hotel with good wifi as I had some work to do ....it also has great breakfast and a bathroom bigger than a matchbox!

Yesterday we walked across the Seine and through the back streets to the Rodin museum to see his sculptures including "the thinker".  Jen bought some new walking shoes (sandals) that have rescued her feet from the punishment of all the walking...From there we wandered to the Eiffel Tower.  The weather is perfect... warm in the sun and cool in the shade.

Thankfully we didn't encounter any more gypsies unlike the other days...they don't like being photographed....

After our day out we caught the Metro back and then we went to a local restaurant for Raclette for dinner... great food and of course the french bread...mmm... a half bottle of Beaujolais went down well....

Then we wandered down the street to another cafe to sit and watch the world go by while Jen enjoyed her hot chocolate....

Today we have to be at Bastille at 2pm for the Opera...

We plan to leave Paris on Monday and head east... not sure where we will go at this stage...

Jen's french is going really well... she's enjoying talking to the shopkeepers and waiters...and they understand her fine.

Jen's view day 2 Paris

Hi everyone

It is so nice to be back here in Paris.
Yesterday we visited l'Orangerie -to see the works of Monet and other famous painters and also the Musee D'Orsay for more culture.

We also visited Monte Marte watching the artists paint - I could have sat there all day to watch them. Wow some people are gifted. The place was alive with a constant stream of people.

We sat in cafe's drinking hot chocolate, watching the world go by. So enjoyable. We have been accosted by gypsy's often but Bob has a theory to warn them off by taking their photo. They do not like that. Works well.

I am practicing my french and believe it or not I am being understood. That is pretty exciting for me although I am far from competent but enjoying the challenge.

The bread and pastries here are to die for and we probably will with the amount we are eating. We walk all day and half the night, so hopefully we will still fit on the plane for the journey home.

I think the highllight of the trip so far was the Four Seasons concert we attended last night. That was a WOW factor - thank you Tertia & Nattie for your thoughtful wedding gift. I wish you could have been here to share it.

Today we will wander the streets again, having no time frame, no destination, nothing to do but just enjoy. What a way to go.

Miss you all very much. Wish you were here to enjoy this experience.

Lots of love from us.

First Day in Paris...

Well here we are !

The fights to and from HK were great... Jen and I did lots of sleeping and Jen is now a great fan of Cathay Pacific... On changing planes in HK we had to sit in an airport cafe listening to a live 3 piece band ... someone has to do it...then a tour of the shops.

We landed in Paris around 7:30am and caught the train in to Chatelet les Halles station... then popped out about 100 metres from our hotel (Hotel Pont Neuf).

We had booked the night before so we could go straight to our room, shower change and then out to a cafe 30 metres away for our first french brekkie.  It was tough but we suffered...mmmmmm

Then walked two blocks to Pont Neuf and across the Seine to the Ile de la Cite and found a cafe for lunch.

A visit to Notre Dame (good photos of the stained glass windows) and then back to our hotel for a jetlag snooze.

The evening we walked to the Louvre and then had a pedal cab ride back with our bicycle driver giving us some historical stuff in his broken english.

The weather is perfect ... about 25 during the day... clear skies...

Jen's french is going well ... talking with the waiter and he's understanding her so all good !

Today will be another tough day ... must be time for breakfast !
