Adventures in Como Part 2 ... the exciting one...
Part 2
The ferry dropped us off yesterday afternoon and we ventured out for some dinner.
This is our hotel room balcony - circled in yellow- with a beautiful view of the lake
Our dinner stop was a very quaint place, lovely setting as you can see right next to the lake about 500 metres walk from our hotel
We had a beautiful view of the lake out the window and the food was superb. All was well, until the worst storm in Como's history struck and we watched through the window as the heavens bucketed down sideways with lightning & thunder and gale force winds. The tree outside the window has only 1/2 it's leaves left now.
We sat in wonderment as to how we could get back to our hotel. Bob decided to have another Sambucca so as to let the storm pass, well, that was his story anyhow. We waited and waited and waited but the storm only got worse so we asked the owner to call us a taxi. Guess what? No taxi's were prepared to come out in the storm, so we had to risk life & limb to attempt to reach our hotel in one piece.
Bob's only concern was the camera getting wet so he asked the owner for a plastic bag to cover the camera. We were eyeing off other people's coats on the cloak rack, but they left before we did, so bad luck for us
However, not to be outdone, the owner offered us the latest in Italian fashion...Here is Jen sporting a little green number - in Itallian we call it Garbigio!!! Versace move over!!!! He also gave us his umbrella which kept our heads dry for about 30 seconds. So there we were, the town penguins waddling our way back to the hotel, being blown all over the road by the wind. Lucky for us we can swim as crossing the puddles on the road was like swimming the English channel.
After the umbrella wrapped around Bob's head and turned inside out, Jen nearly lost an eye as the spokes went crazy. We crossed the busy roads blindly hoping that oncoming traffic didn't hit us as we dared not look.
We reached our hotel looking like drowned rats and quickly dumped the shattered umbrella and removed our 'garbigios' and entered the hotel dripping wet and this is where the concierge looked at us in bewilderment as if to say, what are these vagrants doing here until I asked for our key, and he snapped out of his illusion. The good news is , we arrived back safely, with all limbs in tact.
The storm raged even worse all night and we woke to this view form our room - with snow on the mountains
It was not surprising as we nearly froze to death in the process of getting back last night
After brekky, we took the boat cruise up the lake to Veranna and Belagio which took about 2 hours each way.
The scenery was stunning
And got better each time we turned a corner
Beautiful buildings adorned the foreshore
and the fresh snow on the mountains just made it the prettiest picture you could imagine
The blue sky was a welcome change from the night before but even still, very cold and windy
This is Bellagio - a very touristy town but very beautiful. We passed by this on our way to Varenna for lunch and came back after lunch for a visit
We crossed the lake from Bellagio to Varenna
and had lunch at a quaint little restaurant on the waters edge looking across at Bellagio
This is Varenna, so pretty
The walk to our restaurant was very picturesque
There a many restaurants along the way but we ventured a little further to where we enjoyed a bit of sunshine, delightful food and a great view
Here it is. A beautiful snow covered mountain enjoyed across the water from our lunch spot
Hard to take but somebody has to do it
First course, salad and bruchetta
Second course spaghetti and breaded chop!!!
Third course - great apple strudle - we shared this one
Yum
So we waddled back to the pier 2 hours later - where did the time go???
The boat was on it's way to the pier so we had to hurry - where's Bob???
Run, Jen, Run....
We made it to Bellagio across the water and had a little look around the town
Nice place isn't it??
We saw many beautiful buildings along the waters edge and this castle on the way home (2 hours)
Nice views all round every courner
Not as cold on the way home as we sat inside this time
And here we are back in our hotel room overlooking the lake again.
Must be time for dinner....... Waddle, waddle, waddle.....
