Well... it takes quite a bit for Jen to decide that she wants a double whiskey but that's what italian drivers and roads can do for you.
After our amazing adventure driving the Amalfi coast and managing to miss oncoming traffic and pedestrians yesterday, today we decided to leave plenty of time to get to Napoli train station for our 11am train.
We left our hotel in Positano at 8am and followed our GPS. It was raining and the traffic was its usual nightmare on very small twisty roads. At one point I was passing a line of parked cars when they all started honking and yelling ... I found that it was in fact a traffic jam stopped as there were about three buses trying to come around the upcoming hairpin bend.
Being on the wrong side of the road with buses coming is interesting and somehow managed to find half a car length to duck into amid waving italians... they are such a friendly lot. I am sure they were just saying hello !
The buses passed within an inch of our hire car... plenty of room. Jen's nerves however were heading south fast.
When we finally reached our destination (in the pouring rain) we were on the wrong side of the road so had to "do the block". This involved crossing an intersection where 6 lanes of traffic on our road met 6 lanes of traffic on a cross road with no sign of traffic lights or police. It was all about who can be most agressive and bluff. Thank god for poker practice... we somehow managed to "do the block" in 30 minutes of traffic jam and somehow didn't dint the car.
Well all that is now behind us as we sit on the high speed train heading for Venice ... where thankfully we can leave traffic behind us ...
Bob.,
